Max Steve Rhodes

Max was born in Buncombe County, NC on March 18, 1930 to William A. and Minnie Rhodes. He graduated from Valley Spring High in 1949. Who knew Max would later be their head coach? After high school, Max went to Western Carolina where he received his masters degree in 1955. Max was drafted in to the US Army. He served during the Korean War as a Technical Sergeant for two years. He received an Honorable Discharge.

In 1958, Coach Rhodes led Valley Springs High School to the Class A Championship. He resigned from Valley Spring High in 1958 to become the basketball and baseball coach at Morehead High, where he also taught world history. His basketball record was 28-2, a fine three year record at the school.

In going to Morehead, Max replaced his brother, Ray Rhodes, who resigned.

Coach Rhodes became the head soccer coach at NCSU from 1964-1979, where he was the first winning coach with the best overall record. He retired from NCSU in 1995. Max was a long time member of the NCSU Faculty Club, where he was an avid golfer and swimmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older sister, Louise, who passed away just 5 hours before him.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Steve (Sarah), Tim (Grace), Susan (Blake) and Phillip: 7 grandchildren, Shauna (Travis), Shannon, Timothy D., Steven, Will, Thatcher, and Ashley; 8 great grandchildren, Xavier, Shanaya, Omar, Shawn, Dre, Kahleil and London Mary-Agnes; sisters, Jean Carter and Margret Brown; brother, Vernon Rhodes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 pm on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Rd., Cary, NC 27511. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Monday, March 10, 2014 at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27612.
