Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was married for 63 years to Thomas Nugent, and is mother to Kathleen Keller (Jeff), Kevin (Tracy), and Patricia (Michael Heisterkamp); beloved grandmother to Thomas Patrick, Ryan, Shannon, Margaret, Emma Rose, Colin, Olivia, John, Nicholas and Cara, and numerous nieces and nephews. Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband, brothers John and Curtis Carmichael and sister, Katherine (Carmichael) Wollenweber, as well as her parents, John and May Carmichael.
She was a devoted parishioner at St. Andrew Parish and member of the Quest bible study group. A graduate of Marygrove College in Detroit, she taught elementary school in the Detroit School System, and was involved in many civic organizations and charities, from the League of Women Voters to delivering communion to seniors in nursing homes. She loved boating with her family, genealogy, American history and travel. A favorite memory is when she and Tom were knighted “Lord and Lady of the Castle” on a trip to Ireland. Her constant and tender expressions of love, always putting family first, and being an enthusiastic sports fan—will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Funeral mass will be held Monday, August 12, at St. Andrews Parish in Apex, North Carolina, at 11 a.m. Reception to follow immediately after in the Church Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Healing Transitions of Raleigh, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Father Solanus Guild of Detroit.
