Margaret Inez Lewis Holland

On 3, January our mother slipped away to her heavenly home after 91 years. Mom was born in Deepstep, GA on 5 November 1930 and moved with her family to the Cary area as a 2-year-old and the youngest of 7. After a high school career of basketball, the Echo staff, the Glee Club, the FHA Club and the “C” Club, she graduated and married Harry L. Holland on 11 April 1950. They established their first and only home together at 309 Keener Street in Cary where they raised their 3 children, Lee (Mitchelle), Lisa Emory (Doug) and Lewis.

Mom was an inspiration and guiding light to generations of young girls in Cary as the Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls chapter. She was very active in the local Eastern Star chapter and served in numerous roles over many decades. Her church, Ephesus Baptist, was her foundation and she was active as a Sunday School teacher, cook for the ‘Senior’ Luncheon and unfailing attendee of worship services until her death.

None of us could have asked for a better mother or role model. She provided love, support and guidance in ways we could see and many we could not but are thankful for. She almost never missed a baseball, football, softball game or wrestling match that any of us participated in or any other activity she could attend and provide support. Many times, the support and guidance extended to the officiating crews for these events if she didn’t think they were doing a sufficient job.

In her later years, she moved from Keener Street back to the street on which she grew up and became the queen of the street from her usual spot on the front porch. From her vantage point she observed everything that moved and everyone that passed on the street, waving and engaging all in conversation.

Mom is survived by her children, grandson Taylor Scott (Kelsey), granddaughter Hannah Lee Holland and a host of family members. She is predeceased by her husband, Harry Lee Holland, as well as her brothers and sisters. There is no adequate expression of our love and grief at her passing.

A visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC on Thursday, 1 - 6, at 6 pm to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at Ephesus Baptist Church Friday, 1- 7, at 2 pm with burial to follow at Ephesus Baptist Cemetery.
