Lois Ann Smith, 80 of Cary, North Carolina, passed away on September 21, 2024 after a brief hospital stay. She was born in Cambridge Massachusetts. Lois received her associates degree in home economics and married Howard M. Smith on June 1, 1968.
While she was a full-time homemaker, she helped coordinate the sister-cities student exchange program between Chatham Township NJ and Esternay France from 1989-1993. She was an active member at the Chatham Presbyterian Church as well as a deacon. She arranged the Harvest Sunday charity drive every November which continues to be one of the largest drives the church undertakes to this day.
Lois loved to cook and bake. Her homemade spaghetti sauce was always a culinary wonder, despite its mysterious and improvised ingredients list. She was a fan of traveling and loved to find little ways to help her friends and family. A lover of music, her tastes ranged from classical to showtunes to rock & roll. She was always looking for little ways she could make her friends and families’ lives a little easier and a little more beautiful. You can also find traces of Lois (aka Louis Smith - thanks to an endlessly amusing typo) in some amazing places. Look her up at the Smithsonian for the 1986 Statue of Liberty restoration as a founding doner – under the wrong name.
Lois was survived by her children David J. Smith and Donna R. Kostandy and her two grandsons Aiden Smith and Daniel Kostandy.
A memorial service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saturday October 12th. Interment will follow at the Wake Memorial Park Cemetery, Cary NC. The family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
