She was fortunate to die in her sleep and looked comfortable and resting when Jennifer Anne Stephenson Williams found her in the morning. We assume that her heart simply arrested during the night.
She attended the Jackson City Schools, graduated from W. G. Steele high school and furthered her education at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, NC.
She worked as a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years. She loved her job, and she especially loved her kitties, classical music, genealogy, and reading. Lena had a passion for learning, especially about history and medicine.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, David Bernard James and Lena May Graham, William Thomas Jacobs Howell and Margaret Ione Richards; her parents, Allen Pinkney James and his wife Alice Eugenia Howell; her husband, Edgar Bryan Stephenson, Jr.; and her grandson, Daniel Allen Williams.
Her survivors include her brother, David Allen James; her children, Jennifer Anne Stephenson Williams, and Elizabeth Carol Stephenson and her partner John Travis Gates; her grandchildren, Samuel Patrick Williams, Lena Sigrid Stephenson, and John Edgar Stephenson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lena requested that there be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to SPCA of Wake County, NC, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, or the American Heart Association.
