Larry Gene Grant 72, of Clayton, North Carolina, formerly of Goose Creek, SC, passed away February 18, 2024. He was born in Welch, West Va, and was the son of the late Roy C. Grant jr. (US Navy) and Pauline Grant Proffitt.
Larry is survived by the love of his life, Freda Grant. His only child Jeanna Byrd and son in law Brian, of Holly Springs, NC. His three amazing grandchildren, Grant Byrd, (his best buddy) and twin granddaughters, Lauren and Madison Byrd. Larry affectionately referred to them all as the Magnificent 7. He is also survived by his sisters Debbie Baumberger (Tony) and Sandy Wells (Jimmy), nieces Sandi Goldstein and Kerri Clark, and his best neighbor and friend Earl Bailey. He was preceded in death by his parents, step father Kelley Proffitt, his brother Rick Grant, and his favorite Boston Terrier, Jazz.
Larry was a United States Recon Marine and a proud Vietnam Veteran. Larry was able to “see the world, courtesy of Uncle Sam”, which took him to 32 countries. After he left the military, he made a career in the railroad industry, and went on to retire from CSX Transportation, where he loved every minute of it.
Larry enjoyed golfing and fishing, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed their time at Folly Beach every July. He loved being their D- Dad more than anything in the world. Larry always made sure that his family knew how much he loved them, always reminding them “with all my heart” to end every conversation.
Larry was an avid history buff and knew so much about Charleston and the Civil War that he gave family and friends a tour when he lived there. He loved Charleston and it was always “home” to him. Larry will be remembered for his wit and candor. He had an amazing sense of humor and a positive outlook on life. He will be missed immensely by all who knew and loved him.
