Larry was born on July 29, 1945 to Richard William and Alberta McCullough Carlson in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the West Mecklenburg High School class of 1963 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He served in the Army in the Vietnam War and when he completed his tour of duty, he went on to continue his education and received his undergraduate degree at NC State University followed by his master’s degree at Appalachian State University. He married his wife, Joan Hope French, on May 17, 1975 and they raised a son, Richard Daniel, and daughter, French Hope.
Larry was a fierce NC State Wolfpack fan and enthusiastically followed many sports. He was an avid businessman with a wide range of business ventures throughout his life. He established Edgefield Land and Timber Corporation and enjoyed his career of purchasing and selling acreage and timber. Larry also loved golfing with his family and the many friends he made while playing. He was a steadfast provider for his family whom he loved deeply.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan, and children Daniel Carlson (Dawn) and French Gerke (Mike), along with five precious grandchildren Lynnley Carlson, Allie Carlson, Brielle Carlson, Dawson Gerke and Jackson Gerke. He was also loved by and will be missed by his large extended family.
Preparations are pending for a private celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
