Kevin Homer John, 64, of Cary, North Carolina passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family on June 6th, 2023. Kevin was born January 27th, 1959 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania to parents Captain Robert Dale and Linda Marie (Dosch) John. Proudly the son of an army captain, Kevin lived all over the United States and spent his teenage years in Tokyo, Japan. He settled in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he met his devoted wife, Tina.
He is survived by his wife, Tina, and two children, Kyle (Abbie) and Kayla John. He is survived by his granddaughter, Addison “Addie” John and three fur-grandchildren, Turtle, Oakley, and Gimli, all of whom he loved fiercely. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Linda, and survived by his younger sister, Kelly (Rafael) Rivera.
In 1977, Kevin graduated from Yokota High School in Tokyo, Japan, where he played on their football team and was described as a tough teddy bear. Unknown to many, he pursued a short career in modeling for Big John Jeans, featured in many popular Japanese fashion magazines. After moving back to North Carolina, he worked as a manager for Kinney Shoes and married Tina, the love of his life, on June 8th, 1985. Kevin, or “KJ” as many referred to him, graduated from NC State University in 1993 with a degree in business management. He had a dignified career as a Global Account Manager at Cisco Systems for over 20 years before he retired in 2020. During his time at Cisco, he earned many awards for his hard work and service, most notably the Warrior Award. In his free time, KJ volunteered with the Boy Scouts, serving as: Den Leader, Assistant Cub Master, Assistant Scout Master, and a member of the “Old Goat Patrol” for Pack 120 and Troop 210. Kevin then served as a District Eagle Review Board Member for many years. Kevin channeled his passion for the outdoors with camping trips and summer camps for the Boy Scouts in addition to many great camping weekends with his children, Kyle and Kayla, and, begrudgingly, his wife Tina.
Kevin was known for his generous heart, love for his family and friends, being a die-hard NCSU Wolfpack and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and his grilling and cat-napping skills. He loved spending time with his kids through coaching soccer for Kyle, cheering Kayla on at her basketball games, and enjoying band concerts for both kids. He loved to be at home with Tina in their yard gardening, listening to music, grilling, and befriending many squirrels with his precious granddaughter. He welcomed many with open arms and loved to bring people together from near and far, filling his home with joy and boisterous laughter. Kevin was passionate about helping others achieve their goals; he put words into action by helping create opportunities for those whom he crossed paths. Kevin was a great man - a tough teddy bear to the end. He is loved and respected by many and will be missed greatly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Boy Scout Troop 210 or the UNC Cancer Foundation in his honor.
