John was born near Philadelphia and attended the Haverford School and earned a degree in English at Yale University.
John served in the US Navy in World War II and the US Navy reserves and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant.
He married Dorothy Ann Warren in 1950 and worked for IBM, a job which took them from New York to Rochester, Minnesota to Austin, Texas and finally to Cary, NC. He retired after working on IBM’s System 36 and mainframes. John and Dorothy spent recent years at the Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, where he served on the Resident Council, Spiritual Life Committee, and prayer team. He was a known for his great sense of humor and keen mind as well as his care and compassion for others. He loved reading and learning and started to learn to play the flute this past year. He inspired others to learn and as a volunteer with the literacy movement, assisted others to improve their English language skills.
Hobbies included sailing, golfing, gardening, playing the guitar, and model railroading. He was a long-time member of the North Carolina Live Steam Club.
His great love and service was to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was nurtured through Faith Alive and the Cursillo movement. He and Dorothy served in the Stephen Ministry, through which lay people reach out to care for others in the church. He served on the vestry of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cary, NC and then at Church of the Resurrection in Fuquay-Varina, NC. He was a mentor to many and a great role model to his friends and family of how to live life to the max. He remained active as a prayer warrior until his death.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann (Warren) and sister Caroline Fenn, he leaves behind brother, Peter (Polly) White and 3 children: Caroline (husband Ted) Larson, Peter (wife Vicky) White, and Patsy (husband Dan) Horgan.
Grandchildren Eric (wife Kendra) White, Sarah (husband Greg) Cordova, Anna (husband Ben) Braun, Krista (husband Steve) Frank, and Jeffrey (wife Sarah) Larson, Matthew White, Kylie Horgan, and 12 great-grandchildren
