James Marcus Broom died peacefully with family by his side on November 15, 2024 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born on July 14, 1953 in El Paso, Texas. He was the son of Olen Stuart Broom and Martha Wilcox Dean, both deceased. Jim moved a lot as a child as he was an Army brat. He spent time in Germany when he was a young boy, living on an Army base with his parents. He went to high school at Columbia High School in Columbia, Mississippi. Jim studied at Louisiana State University and then studied accounting at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned his degree. He went on to work for IBM for a long period of his career, where he met many of his friends. He also spent time at Nortel Networks, where he made many more of his lifelong buddies.
He met his wife, Jackie, while vacationing in the Bahamas with a friend and the rest is history. He loved all things maps, history and architecture. Reading was one of his favorite pastimes and he could spend the whole day with his nose in a book. His circle of friends was small but incredibly tight-knit. He loved tinkering in the garage, Roman history, Friday afternoon gatherings with his friends over glasses of wine, fishing, cured meats, cajun seasoning, his neighbors, Planters peanuts and, above all, his dog Benji. Keeping up with his children and their busy lives was something that brought Jim lots of joy. He loved his family dearly and did everything he could to provide happy lives for his wife and children. He is survived by his wife Marie-Cecile Jacqueline Marcotte; his son Philippe Alexandre Broom (married to Audre Anjolea Langebartel); his daughter Camille Broom Connolly (married to Troy Michael Connolly); and by his granddaughter Dallas Michelle Connolly. Jim was also a caring half-sibling to both Shirley Broom Phillips (Bland) Taylor and Ronald Stuart Broom Phillips (deceased).
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Duke Health https://giving.dukehealth.org/ in honor of the incredible care he received while battling cancer.
