Born in Chapel Hill, NC, Howard was the son of the late George and Annie Stewart. He grew up on a dairy farm and then later joined the Marines during Korean conflict as a Marine Corps Detachment on the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa. Upon returning from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Merle.
They moved to Hendersonville where daughter Bridget was born. Their next move was to Chapel Hill as assistant town manager where son, Neal, was born. Then they moved to Cary where he became the first town manager of Cary. Howard spent many years as the Manager for North Carolina State Parks.
At Kerr Lake, he was superintendent of the Kerr Lake State Park Recreation areas and later moved to Raleigh to take the job of district superintendent for NC State Parks including Falls, Jordan and Kerr lakes. While at Kerr Lake the golfing bug hit him and he enjoyed golfing at the Kerr Lake Country Club.
After building a small sailboat in Cary, he enjoyed sailing on Kerr Lake. Friendships were nurtured and he stayed in touch with neighbors, church friends, golfing buddies, and family. Fellowship with church members, especially his Sunday School and Methodist men's group was something he looked forward to.
Some of Howard’s favorite pastimes were playing golf, camping at Kerr Lake, taking and developing pictures, playing the harmonica, gardening, taking walks around the neighborhood with his dog Sammi, and helping the Methodist men with their BBQ's. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren and always made time to spend with them individually.
Vacation travels became fun adventures and a great opportunity to take pictures. One vacation spot that was his happy place was the Amish communities in Pennsylvania. He loved this area so much that he took several grandchildren along to experience the area.
Howard is preceded in death by his father, George Stewart; his mother, Annie (Sparrow) Stewart and his wife, Merle (Hackney) Stewart. Howard is survived by his daughter, Bridget (Woody Daniel); his son, Neal (Pam Stewart); grandchildren, Leslee, David, Phillip and Laura and two great-grandchildren, Luna and Zeki.
