He was born on January 20, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late George Carson King and Louise Hulse King. Howard graduated from Berea High School in Berea, Ohio in 1938 and continued his education at Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). He served as an officer in the United States Army Air Force during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater. He ultimately earned the rank of major in the United States Army.
Howard worked for over forty years as a sales executive in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning industry. He enjoyed a variety of recreational activities including fishing, hunting, golf, tennis and swimming. An avid cook, he was featured in The Cary News for his adventures in the kitchen.
Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Evelyn Burns King; his two sons Bruce King (Bonnie) of Clayton and David King (Cynthia) of Cary; stepchildren Linda Qualls (Scott) of Apex; Robert Castleberry of Sanford; Susan Rowe (Robert) of Sanford, and Janet Clarke of Raleigh; grandchildren Rhonda Berry (Kevin), Robyn King, Adam King (Karleigh), Alexandra King Willix (Bobby), Candice King, Justin King, Kenneth Price, Jennifer Taylor (Joseph) and David Rowe (Jennifer).
He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Angela Donato King and siblings Clayton King, Roy King, Vera King, Clifford King and Esther King.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 West Edenton St., Raleigh, North Carolina 27603. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A committal service with military honors will be held at Lakewood Park Cemetery in Rocky River, Ohio on March 21, 2015.
