Born on July 5, 1928 in Cary, North Carolina; he was the son of the late Herbert E. Young and Gladys Pipkin Young.
Cary, North Carolina was very dear to Herbert, his wife Peggy and their children Linda, Sandy and Betsy. The Young Family opened and operated the Triangle Swim Club and watched three generations of families enjoy swimming and the club. He volunteered with the Cary Parks and Recreation for over 50 years, served as a Town Councilman, refereed at the ACC Basketball Games for 25 years, and was lovingly known as “Uncle Sam” for the Carolina Symphony’s July 4th Celebrations at Koka Booth Amphitheater.
Herbert was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Cary and retired as a Building Engineer from Bell South after 37 years of employment.
He is survived by his daughters: Linda Young, of Cary, Sandy Drews, of Greensboro, and Betsy Fox and husband Clay, of Young Harris, GA; grandchildren: David Drews and wife Aileen, Canaan Drews, Rachel Fox, Michael Fox, Eric Fox, and Jake Fox; great-grandchildren: Valarie and Nolan Fox; sister: Myrtle Johnson, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and by many friends and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Young in 2002 and by sisters, Bertha Comeaux, Peggy Brantley and Evelyn Norman.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Cary. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private family graveside service will be held at a another time.
