Herbert Dale Dixon, 80, went to be with the Lord on May 29, 2010 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 18, 1929 in Kings Mountain in Cleveland County, NC, the third of nine children to Rev. Kelly Dixon and Blanche Patterson Dixon. He served in the US Army, attended Brevard College and graduated from High Point College as a Chemist. He worked for the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC, where he met and married his wife of 51 years, the former Patricia Anne Nalls. He then went on to work for the Environmental Protection Agency in Beltsville, MD and Washington, DC. Then in 1979 he moved his family from Rockville, MD back to his native NC and settled in Cary. After 29 years with the Federal Government, he retired and went to work for the NC Department of Agriculture. He finally retired for good in 1994. A lifelong Christian and life member of the Methodist Men, he served on many church committees, volunteered to rebuild homes after hurricanes Fran and Floyd, worked on Habitat for Humanity homes, and worked for over 25 years at the Cary Methodist Church Restaurant Booth at the NC State Fair. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to Canada and all of the US. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his 6 grandchildren.
Herb is survived by his wife, Patricia Nalls Dixon; children, Susan Dixon Williams and husband, David of Holly Springs, Cathy Dixon-Howard and husband, Joseph of Oxford, Steven Dixon and wife, Shannon of Apex, and Debra Dixon Patterson and husband, Derek of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Sarah and Stephen Williams, Caitlyn and Conner Dixon, and Rhys and Kyra Patterson. He is also survived by his brothers, Jacob and Lane Dixon and sisters, JoAnn Dixon Lindquist, Marilyn Dixon Hamrick, and Becky Dixon Patterson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Dixon Tinsley and brothers, Delbert and A. Lindberg Dixon.
A funeral service will be held 1:00PM Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Cary.
The family will receive friends from 7-9PM Tuesday evening, June 1, 2010 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

Brown and staff, Dr. Mark Graham and staff, Dr. Jon Bruce, the staff of Rex Rehabilitation Center of Apex and the staff of Wake Med Cary Hospital for their expert and compassionate care during his illness. We are also grateful to Rev. Dr. H. William Green and Rev. Dan Lipp.
