Mrs. Gloria Whetstone Houser was born March 31, 1927 in Palm Harbor, Florida. She moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1931 with her family. She was married to John Anthony “Tony” Houser for 58 years. She and her husband were residents of Glenaire a continuing care retirement community in Cary, North Carolina for 23 years. Mr. Tony Houser passed away in 2020.
Mrs. Houser graduated from Duke University with an undergraduate degree in English; attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where she received a Master’s Degree in Library Science. She was a member of Fairmont United Methodist Church in Raleigh.
She was a professional librarian at D.H. Hill Library at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina for 46 years and retired a Director of Periodicals. She was a long time member of the American Library Association, Friends, of the Library at North Carolina State University and the Gloria Houser Endowment Fund.
She is survived by her two nieces, Susan Larmore of Greensboro, North Carolina; Ruth Schallert of Durham, North Carolina and a nephew, Paul Whetstone of Walla Walla, Washington.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Glenaire Continuing Care Retirement Community at 4000 Glenaire Circle in Cary, North Carolina with Rev. Jeanell Cox from Glenaire and Rev. Christina Turner from Fairmont UMC presiding. Mrs. Houser will be laid to rest next to her dear husband, Mr. Tony Houser during a Private Graveside Service at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, North Carolina.
