Elizabeth Anne Myers was born to Helen and Ernest Vahle in Jersey City, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. She was a tomboy and the apple of her papa’s eye. Her parents and two sisters spent summers cruising the Hudson River on their boat, Sabina II. Betty was a champion flautist, playing first flute in the NJ All State Orchestra 1953-1955. She graduated from Dumont High School June 17, 1955.
Betty attended New Jersey State Teachers’ College at Trenton, where she majored in Early Childhood Education. While playing flute in the college band and orchestra, she caught the eye of clarinetist/bassist Francis Myers. They married at Holy Family Church in Union City, NJ on August 16, 1958 and settled in Harrington Park, NJ where the first three of their six children were born.
In early 1965, Betty and Frank loaded up the Chevy Bel Air and moved their ever-growing family to Greensboro, NC. Over the next 11 years, three more daughters joined the Myers zoo.
If anyone ever deserved the title “supermom” it was Betty. She did it all and then some. She was an expert seamstress, sewing everything from Halloween costumes to prom dresses. She even reupholstered the living room sofa herself. She was a wonderful cook. And madone! Her spaghetti sauce made you want to speak Italian.
She was a master gardener. The Myers vegetable garden was admired by everyone in the Scottish Hills neighborhood. Betty was also a talented artist and crafter.
As if this were not enough, Betty held a variety of jobs throughout her years in Greensboro and Cary. Lastly at Burt’s Music where she and Frank both enjoyed retirement side hustles.
Frank and Betty were long time members of Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, and both were members of the choir. They traveled with the choir to Italy in 2003 and even performed there.
But the most important thing to know about Betty is that she is the most loving, compassionate, kind and accepting Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother anyone could ever ask for.
Betty was predeceased by her husband Frank in April, 2024, and by both her parents and elder sister Helene and by son-in-law John Palmour. Left to cherish her memory are her children: David Francis Myers (Christina Joyce Hodgin), Robert Andrew Myers (Lisa Diana Myers), Nancy Anne Palmour, Patricia Ellen Dycus (Steven Wayne Dycus), Susan Marie Somma (Gregory Patrick Somma), Sandra Lynn Overby (Christopher Dale Overby); grandchildren: Andrew, Sophie and Brett Myers, Jennifer Myers (Adrian “Sparky” Parhamovich) and Anna Carrasco (David Carrasco), Chris, Rachel and Ethan Palmour, Bethany Bonner (Patrick Bonner), Matthew, Kristen and Nick Somma and Kamryn and Reagan Overby; great grandchildren: Marshall, Graham and Savannah Bonner, and her younger sister: Susan Buonocore (James).
