She was born Elizabeth Maxine Ramsey, the youngest daughter of Claude and Minnie Ramsey of Gaffney, SC. She spent her youth in Gaffney and, in her late teens, was crowned Peach Queen. She left Gaffney to pursue a career in Atlanta, GA where she met and married V. Otho Dodd.
Otho and Maxine were married in August of 1953 and were blessed over the next 10 years with 3 daughters, Libby, Lori and Leslie. After 10 years supporting and encouraging her husband in his career in the beer business, they then settled in Rocky Mount, NC in 1968 when Otho founded Dodd Distributing Company, a beer distributorship. Maxine was very involved in the Rocky Mount community. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, USTA and tennis communities at Benvenue and Northgreen Country Clubs, and the Tar River Orchestral Society. One of her greatest joys was her extensive world travel with her husband, family and friends, and she also loved spending time with her family and friends at the beach. All three of Maxine’s daughters were married in Rocky Mount, and she was blessed with seven grandchildren. After the unexpected death of her husband in 1995, Maxine remarried Dr. Raymond T. Doyle, also of Rocky Mount, in 1999. After their marriage, Maxine and Ray also enjoyed many international trips. In 2003, they relocated to the Cary area to be closer to family.
Maxine lived life vivaciously, and was a gracious and elegant hostess. She was incredibly generous, easy-going, uplifting, like a ray of sunshine, and loved by all who knew her.
Maxine was preceded in death by her first husband Otho Dodd, her parents Claude and Minnie Ramsey, and her three sisters, Alma Ramsey Parris, Dorothy Ramsey Humphries, and Imogene Ramsey McMichael. She is survived by her second husband Dr. Raymond T. Doyle, of the home, her daughters, Libby Dodd Slight of Cary, NC; Lori Dodd Hattori of Apex, NC; and Leslie Dodd Schappell of Cary, NC., sons-in-law David Hattori of Apex, NC and Ron Schappell of Cary, NC, and her seven grandchildren; Derek Slight, Allison Slight, Kaitlyn Slight, Kelly Hattori, Taylor Hattori, Hunter Schappell and Graysen Schappell, who will carry her in their hearts.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 2:00PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 301 S. Circle Dr., Rocky Mt, NC.
