As big hearted in spirit as he was, after almost four months of hospitalizations and rehab facilities, his oft-repaired heart and lungs were no longer able to sustain his larger-than-life persona.
Since January, my “updates” on Don have been expressions full of hope, and hopefully some humor. Sadly, now I am all out of hope, and humor is in short supply.
Don and I met and married in New York City and shared 35 love-filled, laugh-filled, years together. We shared our Cary, NC home with Fred and Ethel Mertz, our two “rescue” kitties. The three of us will deeply miss cuddling with him and feeling his gentle touch. I am tempted to write more about “Us”, but I cannot. My keyboard is not waterproof. I trust that the depth of our love was evident, and needs no examples.
Don is also survived by his first wife, Jan, and their children Rob Mertz, and Kim Bell, and five grandchildren, Sarah, Meredith Kate, and Parker Bell, and Andrea and Alec Mertz.
If you go onto Don’s website (mertzart.com) and click on “Biography”, you will learn how a Norman Rockwellian small-town boy went from the Marines to Corporate America to becoming an award-winning Abstract Artist in his late 60’s. And if you click on “Expletive Deleted” you will chuckle at classic Mertz humor. You may even like some of the art …
I have been struggling greatly to find words that describe a man so indescribably unique and who has so consistently touched our hearts and tickled our funny-bones. A man who always brought the party with him.
And then I realized that all of you have those words in your own funny, touching, silly wild and wacky stories, that together could create a eulogy that is a collage of moments as full of wit, humor, love, acts of kindness and words of wisdom as Don was. I invite you to share those thoughts, memories, or photos below and together we can create a tapestry of Mertz-isms that will be one Crazy Quilt of comfort for us all, and one that we can return to, and see what new threads of memories have been woven in.
With love and gratitude for all your support, and for your friendship,
Carol
