Derek’s life was filled with love & joy. He grew up in Midland, NC with his parents Steve & Alice and his brothers, Matt & Dalton. Derek always had a competitive spirit - he played sports throughout his childhood and he excelled at soccer, basketball, and baseball. He enjoyed board games and video games, he modified Nerf guns, and had a creative mind building electronic projects. Derek graduated from Central Cabarrus High School and NC State University and was employed as a software engineer. His family was close and visits brought them together often. Derek, his brothers and all of their spouses, gathered together with their parents for games, laughter, and love. We will all miss Derek and his brothers laughing together and teasing one another.
He and his wife, Allison, had a wonderful love. They met in college and shared 10 beautiful years together. They enjoyed being outdoors, catching up with friends, working on house projects, and playing with their sweet dog Maya. The love of their lives is their 10-month old son, Theo Michael, and they treasured all of their moments with him. Derek was such a wonderful father and absolutely loved being Theo’s daddy, who he was so proud of and was the light of his life. Derek enjoyed life, loved making others laugh, and always had so much love to give. He was a kind person to his core. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, daddy, uncle, grandson & friend.
Derek enjoyed other hobbies such as competing in disc golf tournaments, playing online games with his good friends, and was passionate about learning new skills. He enjoyed time in his woodshop in the garage where he built furniture, a beautiful bar, and he and Allison completed many remodeling projects together for their home.
Derek was loved fiercely by his family & friends and he is deeply missed. He is survived by his wife Allison (Nguyen), his son Theo Michael, his parents Steve & Alice Schreiner, his brother Matt Schreiner, sister-in-law Rebecca and niece Ava, his brother Dalton Schreiner and brother-in-law Jonathan, his grandparents Richard & Irene Schreiner and Sue Hawk. Derek was preceded in death by his grandfather Bill Hawk and grandmother Kay Hawk.
