Danny Allan Hudson passed away September 17, 2014 at Transitions Health Care after a 17 year long battle with prostate cancer. Dan was born in Cramerton, NC on November 16, 1939 to Paul Thornley Hudson and Geneva Gillespie Hudson who predeceased him. After graduating from Cramerton High School, Dan received a BA degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and in 1966 a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University where he was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa and graduated with honors.
Dan joined the United States Public Health Service upon graduation and was stationed in Atlanta, GA as a member of the Centers for Disease Control-Epidemiological Intelligence Service and then in Las Cruces, NM where he did rabies investigation and surveillance. His daughter Melissa, was born in Atlanta. After completing his service with CDC, Dan worked in private practice in Portsmouth, VA where his son Paul was born.
In 1970, Dan moved his family to Cary, NC where he opened Mayfair Animal Hospital, becoming the first veterinarian to open a practice in Cary. Dan was involved in civic life in Cary as a Rotarian, serving as president of the Cary Rotary Club and becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.
Later he opened Northwoods Animal Hospital where his daughter Melissa took over his practice when he retired in 2005.
In retirement, Dan enjoyed birding and was successful in sighting 698 species out of a possible 914 in North America and many other species in his travels to South America, Africa, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Melissa, his son, Paul, and their mother, Pat Hudson, his brother Mike Hudson (Earlene), his sister, Wanda Lambert (Tom), his nieces, Michelle Hudson, Jennifer Barnes (Steve), and Heather Edwards (Peedie), Johanna Silber (Frank) and their families.
We treasure the family, friends, and neighbors who have supported our family through this long journey and thank the caregivers from Home Instead who worked so hard to make Dan comfortable while he remained at home and Hospice Home for the compassionate care there.
Dan’s Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 19th at 1:00 PM at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, 110 SE Maynard Rd in Cary. Family will receive guests in the Narthex following the service.
