Daniel “Danny” was born in Washington, DC on July 1, 1961 to John and Nancy McCracken. Growing up in Arlington, Virginia, Danny played in several sports but excelled in soccer. Soccer was a family affair where all the McCracken family participated whether that was as a player, coach, or community advocate. He graduated from Yorktown High School in 1979. He headed to the mountains of North Carolina where he attended and graduated from Warren Wilson College with a degree in Economics. He settled in Cary, North Carolina and started his long career with Glaxo Smith Kline in 1984. He focused on information technology and worked as an IT project manager.
Danny was a man of many hobbies but one that stands out the most was rock climbing. Danny started rock climbing in the early 2000s and quickly immersed himself in the sport. He climbed regularly at various climbing gyms and traveled to climb outdoors many times a year. He was active with the American Alpine Club and taught several classes through the organization. He was also one of the founders of the Triangle Chapter for the American Alpine Club. He taught Wilderness First Aid classes many times and quite a few climbers retell stories of practicing injuries and carrying people out. Danny had climbed the Grand Tetons, Mount Rainer, Table Rock, Linville Gorge, Moore’s Wall, Joshua Tree, and so much more.
Danny has one daughter, Rebecca. He was very proud of her and spoke of her often.
