Born on September 8, 1951 in Bedford, Indiana, she was the daughter of William C and Charlotte R Lewis. Brenda had a distinguished career in nursing. She obtained her Bachelors and Masters in Nursing from Indiana University and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas. She served as Regional Dean of Nursing at Texas Tech University. Brenda then served as the Executive Director of The North Carolina Center for Nursing and afterwards the National Center for Nursing in Washington, D.C. Brenda was the recipient of numerous awards during her career for her teaching accomplishments and written publications. Throughout her career, she was a vocal champion and advocate for both nurses and the nursing profession, and was frequently called upon to provide her expertise in national forums and to members of government.
Later in life, Brenda’s career of advocacy led her to become involved in politics more directly. She served in advisory roles and helped campaign for numerous elected officials at various levels. In 2014, she was the Democratic Party nominee for the NC-13 district of the United States House of Representatives.
Brenda was one of the most genuine, humble, and caring souls you could ever meet. Her smile was like sunshine and warmed everyone with its glow. Her passion for making the world a better place not only showed in her professional work, but in every interaction she had with others. Whether it was mentoring students considering a career in nursing, giving counsel to the terminally ill, or simply being a listening ear for friends in good times and bad, to know Brenda was to know joy, kindness, compassion, and grace. Above all, Brenda always saw the best in others, and her belief in the ultimate good in the world and the people in it was a deep inspiration to all those who had the fortune of crossing paths with her.
Brenda is predeceased by her father, William C. Lewis, and mother, Charlotte R. Lewis, as well as her brothers, William “Billy” Lewis, and David Lewis. She is survived by husband Woodie S Cleary of Cary, NC and sons Richard G Mostak of Davidson, NC (Kayla), son Todd L Mostak (Kezia) of Apex, NC. Brenda has six grandchildren, of whom she was tremendously proud and referred to as “the ice cream cone of life”: Austin, Emerson and Stellan of Davidson, NC and Zola, Darwin and Pascal of Apex, NC.
