Bobby is survived by his wife, Laura Jones Simpson, daughter, Sandra Leigh (David) Denmark of Ferrum, VA, son James Reginald (Tracy) Simpson of Raleigh, grandchildren Bailey and Cameron Simpson and their mother Bobbi Carol Batts, all of Belmont, NC.
He was preceded in death by his son Bobby Lee Simpson, Jr., brother Billy George Simpson and beloved aunt Essie Simpson Edwards.
Bobby was born in Montgomery county. Following the death of his parents, he entered the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh at the age of 8 along with his younger brother.
He always said that growing up in the orphanage was the best thing that could have happened to him. This is where he learned discipline, self reliance, responsibility and respect for others. He never tired of telling stories about his years there and all the adventures with his orphanage brothers and sisters. They truly were one big family.
After aging out of the orphanage, Bobby attended High Point College, Campbell University and completed his education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. His entire professional life was dedicated to the Great American Insurance Company, retiring in 1992 after 40 years.
Bobby was a very humble and private person who never wanted to be the center of attention. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor who always put the welfare of family and others first his entire life.
In keeping with Bobby's wishes, there will be no public visitation or service. Memorial gifts may be made to the Methodist Home for Children at 1041 Washington St. Raleigh, NC 27605 or at mhfc.org.
