Born December 28, 1941, in Gadsden, Alabama, she was the only child of the late Jasper and
Bessie Strawn.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years Jim Wescott, her children Carl
Wescott, Laura (John) Venezia, and Janet (Ryan) Baucom, and her grandchildren Ryan
Venezia, Emily Venezia, Peter Baucom, and Evan Baucom.
Known by childhood friends and family as “Susie,” Barbara grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, and
attended Jacksonville State University. She worked in a bank and became an auditor for the
Internal Revenue Service. She was soon selected to become a programmer in the early days of
computers and moved to the Washington, D.C. area. It was in a commuter carpool to the IRS
that she met her beloved husband Jim. She was promoted to supervisor and then opted for an
early retirement to become a homemaker. Jim and Barbara lived and raised their children in
Springfield, Virginia, for 38 years before relocating to Morrisville, North Carolina, to be closer to
their daughter Janet’s family. She enjoyed almost ten years in the community at Preston Pointe
Senior Living Community.
Barbara was an avid reader, a music lover, and a wonderful southern cook. She was quick to
welcome friends and family around the kitchen table. Nothing made her happier than having her
children and grandchildren gathered around her. They will miss her greatly.
Given pandemic precautions, a celebration of her life will be held at a later time when family and
friends can gather safely.
