Barbara Ruth Schroeder, 98, died January 22, 2013. She was born in Champaign-Urbana, IL on May 8, 1914 to Bernard Andrew Strauch and Pearl Ashton Strauch. Barbara graduated in 1930 from University High School in Champaign-Urbana. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1935 from the University of Illinois. She studied Interior Architecture and Decoration from 1940-41 at Parsons School of Design in New York, NY.
Barbara worked as a Home Lighting Consultant for General Electric from 1936-1940 in Joliet, IL. From 1941-1942, she worked as an Interior Designer in New York, NY. She also worked as an Interior Designer from 1945-1950 in Circleville, OH.
Barbara was a Life Member of University of Illinois Alumni Association and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was also a member of Berger Hospital Guild for over 25 years. She was a parishioner at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Fuquay-Varina.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Henry John Schroeder; children, Patricia S. Loheed and husband, Philip, of Lincoln, MA, John B. Schroeder of Acton, MA, Victoria Schroeder Chandler and husband, Chad, of Fuquay-Varina, NC and son, Thomas C. Schroeder and wife, Kathleen, of Apex, NC. She also leaves behind grandchildren: Kristin G. Loheed, Matthew J. Loheed and wife, Beth, Erica L. Schroeder, Adrienne J. Schroeder, George A. Chandler, and Jeffrey A. Chandler and great grandchildren, Dominik and Scarlett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Ashton Strauch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 28th at 11 AM, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Private burial will follow at Wake Memorial Park in Cary, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
