Barbara was born May 18, 1931 in Mansfield, OH to J. Marvin and H. Loretta Perry. She was also preceded in death by her sister Marjorie Perry Walters of Franklin, NC, and her brother John J. Perry of Salome, AZ. She graduated from Mansfield High School in 1949, and she married Donald F. Moyer in 1951. This last June they celebrated 71 years of marriage, and he will miss his beloved wife very much.
Barbara and her family lived in Naples, FL, Melbourne, FL, and Boca Raton, FL, before retiring to Cary NC.
Barbara and Don have three children: Debbie Moyer of Garner, NC; Gregory Moyer, who preceded her in death, and Danny Moyer, Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Delaney, Deanna, and Devon Moyer, all of Atlanta, GA.
Barbara dedicated her life to her family, and she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Barbara always enjoyed working outside the home. As a great book lover, she especially relished her time spent working in libraries, notably the Boca Raton Public library and the Florida Atlantic University library. She retired in 1991 as a university library cataloger in order to begin her new, long-anticipated career as a grandmother.
Whether working as a homemaker or outside the home, Barbara volunteered her time to many worthy causes. She selflessly dedicated her time and talents in service of others. She tutored first graders in pre-literacy skills and high school students in a literacy program. Barbara frequently led parent volunteer groups for local youth sports teams, including the Boca Raton High School Quarterback Club. She spent several years working tirelessly as a volunteer at the Boca Raton High School, both in the library and the health clinic. In 1981 she received the Boca Raton News Community Service Award.
After relocating to North Carolina, Barbara continued to answer the call to service. For ten years she volunteered at the Easter Seal Society of NC, organizing the agency's library, providing direct support to Stroke and Post-Polio support groups across the state, assisting with special events, and faithfully tackling any task requested.
In 1998 Barbara received the Easters Seals Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2000 she received the JC Penny Golden Rule Award for outstanding contributions for exceptional volunteer service in the Triangle area.
In an interview in the News & Observer, she was quoted, "Not only do volunteers meet needs and supply services for a worthwhile organization, they receive satisfaction knowing they have helped make a difference in people's lives." A good volunteer needs "commitment, a sincere desire to help, a positive attitude, and love and respect for all people."
As a faithful Christian and church member, Barbara dedicated much time in the service of others. This took many forms, from teaching and working with children to aiding in the clean up after the devastation of hurricane Andrew in South Florida.
For several years she taught a women's Bible Study. One of her greatest passions was her many years working with Lay Renewal weekends in churches across Florida and North Carolina, leading small groups with a focus on spiritual renewal and lay service.
Barbara was an avid reader all her life, and she taught this same love to her children and her grandchildren. She was always interested in history, especially American history and politics. She loved trees; often she would stop to admire a beautiful tree, calling it to everyone's attention. Barbara's life was a shining example of love and service to others, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
