He lived in Kansas City for over 60 years, and grew up among a large and loving Italian family. Dr. Blando attended Manual High School and graduated from the University of Kansas City (now UMKC). He obtained his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences, completed an internship and residency in General Surgery, and served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at his alma mater. Dr. Blando had a long and active career in private practice as a general surgeon, performing over 23,000 surgeries, holding numerous leadership positions, and touching many lives. He practiced at Lakeside Hospital for many years and served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Blando joined the staff of Overland Park Regional Medical Center when it opened in 1978 and remained on the staff until his retirement, during his tenure serving as Chief of Surgery, President of the medical staff, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. In retirement, Dr. Blando and his wife, Joan, relocated to Cary, North Carolina. They enjoyed many well-deserved retirement years together, spending time with family and friends, and playing lots of golf in Cary and Naples, Florida.
Dr. Blando was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Mary Cambiano.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Blando; his son, Joe Blando (Karen); daughter, Jennifer Ferris (Mike); grandchildren Catherine Blando, Joe Blando, Jr., Hope Ferris, and Claire Ferris; brother, Dr. Manual Blando; sister, Jennie Wright; and lovingly remembered by many extended family members and friends.
The family is planning a celebration of Dr. Blando’s life at a later date.
