Ann Elizabeth Bishop Messick, 77, died in her home in Cary, NC on Friday, October 5, 2012 of complications from ovarian cancer. She was born in 1935 in Philadelphia, a middle child of parents Rev. George Warren Bishop and Helen Louise Johnson. She graduated from Frankfort High School in Philadelphia before migrating South with her husband of over 50 years, Rev. Ralph George Messick. Together Ralph and Ann raised two boys, Thomas Ralph Messick and William Curtis Messick, in Eastern North Carolina.
Ann steadfastly advocated for, nurtured, and adored Ralph, Tom, and Bill along with their wives, Sandy and Kristine, and her grandchildren: Lauren, Sarah, Kathryn, John, and Andrew with a sacrificial love that was kind and generous. She was well-loved in return and will be greatly missed.
Ann is also survived by her brothers: Arthur, James, and Robert Bishop; her sister, Mary Reighn; and by many nieces and nephews.
A life-long member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she was last a member of St. Paul's Christian Church in Raleigh, NC. Ann loved to sing in choirs and practiced a life in which no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
Her friends and family will miss her perceptive wit that discovered irony in most all circumstances.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in the chapel of the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home located at 200 S.E. Maynard Road in Cary, NC 27511 with a private interment at Christmount in Black Mountain, NC to follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ann's memory may be made to Hospice of Wake County or the church of your choice.
