Ann Brookes Kurz, 83, of Glendale (St. Louis), Missouri, passed away in Chapel Hill, North Carolina June 30, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Henry Spence Brookes, Jr. and Ruth Crossen Brookes. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Grinnell College, Iowa, and taught second and third grades until she married in 1963. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, James E. Kurz, Sr, her sister Susan Brookes Papke of Ellington, CT, and two sons, Jeffrey Kurz, PhD, of Acton, MA, and Dr. James Kurz, Jr, MD, of Pittsboro, NC as well as five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers H. Spence Brookes III and James Crossen Brookes.
Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher. In St. Louis, she was very active in her church, Bonhomme Presbyterian, Chesterfield, Missouri as well as the philanthropy PEO. She also enjoyed cooking, traveling, socializing, and watching Cardinals baseball. Her family meant the most to her, and thus she and Jim moved to Cary, NC, in 2007 to be closer to her grandchildren.
The family will greet friends from 1:00-2:30 pm at Cary Presbyterian Church, 616 Griffis St. in Cary, NC on Saturday, July 8, 2017. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 pm followed by a private graveside service. Her husband Jim will then host a reception at his home in Carolina Preserve starting at 5:30; all family and friends are invited.
In addition to the many family and friends that cared so much for Ann, her family would like to thank the women of PEO Chapter DQ in St. Louis and Chapter AS in Cary. We are also very grateful to the staff at Brookdale Senior Living in Chapel Hill, NC, for their wonderful care of Ann over the past 3 1/2 years, and we want to send a special “thank you” to Ann’s angel on earth over the past few months, Lauren Williams, of Amedisys Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Alzheimer's North Carolina in Raleigh (1305 Navaho Dr. Ste 101 Raleigh, NC 27609) and/or Amedisys Hospice Care (220 New Fidelity Ct, Garner, NC 27529).
