Sylvia Janice (Smith) Kimsey, age 87, of Cartersville, Georgia, passed away at Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center on Thursday August 3, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born on April 11, 1936, in Cartersville to the late Emory Smith and the late Ruth Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Kimsey, and a sister, Harriet Reeves.
Sylvia was known for her dedication and hard work. She worked as a lunchroom manager at Cloverleaf Elementary School and also at Cartersville Childcare, where she took care of babies and young children.
John and Sylvia loved the North Georgia Mountains and had a cabin in Cherry Log and loved spending time there. In her free time after John passed away, Sylvia enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing. She was renowned for her delicious meals and mouthwatering desserts. She also had a green thumb and loved tending to her flowers. Sylvia was also known to be quite the shopper, and along with her sister, Nancy, they were always on the lookout for the best deals.
Sylvia was a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she found solace and strength in her faith. She loved the choir and when she was younger, she sang in the choir faithfully. She was also on the History Committee of the church and spent many hours gathering and organizing the photos and articles on the history of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Sylvia is survived by her two children, Phillip Kimsey and Allison K. Taylor, as well as her four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a sister, Nancy Adcock (EB Adcock), brother in law, Jack Reeves (Annette) and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Sylvia Kimsey will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 10, 2023 in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Dr. Patrick Latham officiating. The interment will follow at Cassville Cemetery with Andy Harris, Barry Jones, Don Wilson, Dalton Abernathy, Steven Jones, Sean Vere, Benton Wilson and Brady Wilson serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the funeral home from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm.
