Dr. John Wade Walker Jr., 93, of Marietta, Georgia and formerly of Cartersville and Decatur, Georgia, passed away on November 11, 2013 in the company of his large and loving family. Dr. Walker was born on March 4, 1920 in Irvine, Kentucky to the late Anna Mae Mather and John Wade Walker. He is preceded in death by his wife, Polly Shivers Walker and a grandson, Bradford Gordon Lamkie. Johnny met the love of his life, his Polly, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1947, and they married on October 21, 1948. The Walkers’ six children stated the following attributes in reference to their father: God-inspired, man of character, compassionate, humble, man of stability, respectable, charming, hard worker, steadfast family man, musician, avid fisherman, and beloved physician.
After attending Carson Newman College and University of Louisville Medical
School, Dr. Walker served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps before being honorably
discharged to become a medical missionary, with Polly, in 1950 to Zaire, Africa--
formerly known as Democratic Republic of Congo. The Walkers served there for
five years before returning to The States. Dr. Walker practiced obstetrics and
gynecology at DeKalb Medical Center, formerly DeKalb General Hospital, from
1960 to 1986. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Cartersville.
Dr. Walker is survived by his six children: John Wade Walker III (Jeanie) of
Carriere, Mississippi; Mary Ann Elrod (Jim) of Woodstock; Kathy Seder (Jim) of
Snellville; Laura Lea Lamkie (Rhys) of Lawrenceville; Joan Page (Donny) of
Marietta; and (William Shivers) Billy Walker (Lisa) of Lawrenceville. GoodDaddy is
also survived by numerous grandchildren, as well as three great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Wellstar Atherton
Place, Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and Wellstar Tranquility Community Hospice
at Kennesaw Mountain for the excellent care our father has received. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Congo mission where Dr. and Mrs. Walker

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning November 14th at 11:00 am in the Owen Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ike Reighard and Rev. David Shivers officiating. Interment/Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 pm at the Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery in Rossville, GA. with military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 pm and Thursday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 am at Owen Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Sons and Grandsons of Dr. Walker.
