James Hendricks “Jim” McElreath, 90, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2020. He was born on July 9, 2030, the youngest child of Dr. Hadon P. McElreath and Bessie Hendricks McElreath. He is predeceased by brothers Sam McElreath, H.P. McElreath, Pierce McElreath, Robert McElreath, and sisters Sara McElreath Morgan, Mildred McElreath, and Helen McElreath Cothran. He is survived by his wife Jane Stevens McElreath, two stepsons, Eric Stevens (Susan) and David Stevens (Cara), four grandchildren, Julia Stevens, Phillip Stevens, Amelia Stevens, and Sadie Stevens, and his very special nieces and nephews. After two years at Emory University, Jim served in the United States Army following World War II, and was stationed in Europe. He graduated from the University of Georgia and began working as a reporter for the Marietta Journal. He began a printing business in his garage which became Star Printing in Acworth, Georgia, where he highly valued his employees and was dedicated to making the business an enjoyable place to work. A gentleman farmer, he loved hay baling, hosting animals including beautiful belted Galloways for a time, keeping vegetable gardens and fruit trees, riding in his tractor, fighting a never-ending battle with beaver dams, and watching the sun set over the acres with a glass of Chivas on the rocks. He was an avid antiques collector and published a magazine dedicated to the hobby for many years. Jim especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, all of whom relished in his tales of life in his beloved Cartersville. Jim’s life will be honored with a private family graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville, conducted by Reverend Michael Tutterow. Those wishing to make a contribution in his name might consider the Bartow Humane Society, as Jim loved the many dogs who enjoyed farm life by his side. A very special thank you to Assured Hospice. You have helped ease the burden tremendously without your loving care of Jim and we will be forever grateful for making his final days as smooth and painless as possible. A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date. Owen Funeral Home, Collins Dr., Cartersville, GA 30120 has charge of the arrangements.
