Elsie was born on May 31, 1934, to Zeno and Ethyl Stringfellow of tiny McKenzie, Alabama. She left that rural life behind at age 22 when she married Russ, a young Air Force officer. Together they traveled the world, having two children along the way. Elsie seemed to enjoy the military life even more than Russ, appreciating the pageantry, the protocols, and the opportunities it provided, and not even minding the frequent moves. They lived in four states plus England and the Azores.
Elsie loved fashion, a passion she pursued through her creativity and sewing skills. The clothing she made for her grandchildren – including Christening gowns – was stunning. And she was also a terrific cook; her buttermilk pies and pound cakes were family legends.
Yet Elsie’s greatest love was her family, and they loved her back. She had all the best qualities of a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was loving, giving, and unwaveringly supportive of “her people.” She is survived by her son, Keith Jarrett (Holly) of New Orleans, Louisiana, and her daughter, Karen Lewis (Jim) of Cartersville, Georgia, plus adoring grandchildren, Kelsey Jarrett of Mandeville, Louisiana, Zachary Jarrett (Allie) of New York, New York, and Sarah Jarrett Perry (Crane) of Atlanta, Georgia, “bonus” granddaughter Lauren Gaines of Ballground, Georgia, and “bonus” great-granddaughters Charlotte and Indiana.
Elsie was predeceased by her beloved husband Russ, her parents, Zeno and Ethyl, her brother Zeno Stringfellow, Jr., of Montgomery Alabama, and her sister Winnie Phillips of Mobile, Alabama.
She was a remarkable woman who was very loved, and she will be missed.
