Bruce is survived by his wife, Becky, his children, Faith and Max, his adopted father, Dr. Austin Flint, his brother, Jason Sluggett, and his sister, Tonya Bruce.
A loving father, husband, friend, patriot and servant to many. Bruce loved boldly and deeply for all to bear witness. A man firmly rooted in his faith, Bruce, after a life that began with insurmountable challenges yet resulted in unbelievable success, is now peacefully at rest and is reunited with his Heavenly Father.
Born in Fresno, California on February 9th, 1965, Bruce grew up in Big Sandy, Montana where he developed his insatiable work ethic and resiliency on his family farm. These traits, along with many others, helped him to earn a college scholarship to wrestle at Montana State University- Northern where he earned his associate’s degree. Bruce possessed a true servant’s heart which burst with radical love for his country, and he never took for granted the honor it was to serve for six years in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Bruce was a deeply passionate man who was blessed with a unique vision for identifying needs in his communities which allowed him to blossom into a self-labeled, “Serial Entrepreneur”. The creator of several businesses which included two automatic pool cover businesses, six insurance agencies, two funeral homes, and several software companies. Bruce always felt that more could be done to improve the quality of lives he touched through his companies, this desire to help others did not end in business alone. Bruce always strived to improve his community and the lives of those in it outside the walls of an office.
Bruce felt honored to serve as Personnel Chairman at his church, Cartersville First Baptist, but his serving did not end there. Bruce was immensely proud to serve in numerous organizations including the SBA Advisory Board, Insurance Commission Advisory Board, Truett McConnell University, Reinhardt University, First National Community Bank, and Etowah Scholarship Foundation. A firm love for his community of Cartersville, Georgia always motivated him to give more.
This love for his community and the people in it kickstarted Bruce’s path to serve as State Senator for much of Bartow and Cherokee County from 2014-2022. It was there where Bruce utilized his “Bulldog” attitude to successfully lead the charge for numerous bills such as the heartbeat bill, rape termination, and the Dexter Mosley (Tebow) bill. A pro-life champion and product of a sex crime himself, Bruce never took for granted how his life was chosen and he worked vigorously to lead the way in the fight for life. Bruce was a man who held his convictions tightly and remained steadfast in his fight for conservative values while also believing in bipartisan cooperation to best serve his constituents. His fervor energized him to serve as chairman of numerous committees such as the Science & Technology Committee, the Veterans & Homeland Security Committee and the Economic Development & Tourism Committee. His service to the state of Georgia did not end there.
It was in 2021 when Bruce announced that he would run for the office of the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor. Bruce truly believed that Georgia was the number one place to do business in the United States and as someone who felt truly blessed to achieve success here, he wished to spread that to as many as he could. Bruce worked tirelessly to earn the votes of his constituents and felt thoroughly honored to serve as the Commissioner for the Department of Labor in the time he was able. Just as Bruce took great pride in his work which is shown in his outstanding accomplishments, it paled in comparison to the pride and love he felt for his family.
Bruce married the love of his life, Becky, on May 31st, 1997. They welcomed in their daughter, Faith, in 2000 and their son, Max, in 2005. A truly loving father, he instilled the same work ethic and compassion that he possessed, into his own children. Bruce and Becky built the foundation of their family on the Holy gospel of Jesus Christ and often referred to their family verse, James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” Bruce never shied away from loving his family boldly and openly for all to see. As a man of God, Bruce helped to cultivate an immense love and belief for our Lord and Savior in his children throughout their lives. A love and belief that will never fade and will help provide comfort in knowing that one day, he will be reunited with his family and friends, just as he has reunited with his heavenly Father.
