Wanda was born December 10, 1937, in Rising Star, Texas to Marion and Marjorie West. She had one brother, Oliver West, and one sister, Juanita Hollis (West). She attended May High School and was Valedictorian of the class of 1955. She attended Cisco Junior College for two years, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at North Texas State College (now known as the University of North Texas).
As a gifted writer, Wanda had a long and varied professional life. She began her career at the Dallas Times Herald as an entertainment writer which allowed her to meet celebrities from Steve McQueen to Sean Connery. She helped hold down the newsroom on the tragic day of November 22, 1963. From there, she was a marketing communications writer for Braniff International Airways which supported her love of global travel. She then joined the ad agency world at Paul Berry Advertising and Steve Moi & Associates, and rounded out her career at Temerlin McClain (TM Advertising), spending 25 years as a writer and Account Supervisor on the American Airlines account. Her greatest legacy was the mentoring and teaching of legions of young people starting their careers in advertising, who she fondly called her “kids”.
Wanda was a Renaissance woman with a wide range of interests. She was a voracious reader – reading 4 -5 books a week – and was never happier than in a bookstore, library or attending her book club or meeting a new author. She was an animal lover and, through the years, had a menagerie of dogs, cats and other assorted creatures. She was smart, witty and could tell a great story. She had wisdom, common sense and a good heart.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Brown, and her parents Marion and Marjorie West. She is survived by her son, Kurt Brown, her brother Oliver West, sister Juanita Hollis, numerous nieces and nephews, and her dog, Jack.
Visitation for Wanda Brown will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 10:00am – 12:00pm, at Metrocrest Funeral Home, 1810 N. Perry Rd., Carrollton, TX 75006. A Graveside Service will follow at Furneaux Cemetery, 3650 Cemetery Hill Rd., Carrollton, TX, at 1:00pm.
