Born January 9, 1935, to Marvin and Leonora Gammage in Houston, TX. Sally graduated from Chas. H. Milby High School. She attended the University of Houston for one year before joining the US Navy in March 1954 and into the Hospital Corps in June 1954. While in the Navy, she met and married the love of her life, Dexter Moore of Middletown, Ohio. Their marriage ended after 3 years and Sally returned to Houston where she began her successful career in laboratory medicine. First she trained in Histology at Baylor College of Medicine, and soon worked her way up to Department head of the Anatomy Department. But her yearning to go higher took her to Dallas, Texas where she worked for her mentor, Dr. John L. Goforth. Dr. Goforth saw the potential in Sally and sent her to St. Paul Hospital to train in Cytology. Upon graduation, Sally went to work for Dr. George Race and associates as both Histo tech and Cyto tech. In 1972 she was elected President of the Southern Association of Cytotechnologists. While working full time in the lab Sally attended and graduated from UTA in 1977. In 1979 and again in 1992, she was President of the Texas Society of Cytology, the only person to be elected to that office twice. Sally resigned from Cytology in 1980 and began an 11 year career in insurance at the behest of her two brothers, Manny and Gerry. She worked for John Hancock Life Insurance and Pilot Life Insurance. During that period Sally maintained her national registry license working part-time for technologist colleagues who needed help from time to time. In May 1991, she returned full time to her love of Cytology. After a long and successful career in Cytology, Sally retired in March of 2002, but the rocking chair wasn’t for her so she went to work for Murray Hill Center as a medical recruiter, recruiting doctors, nurses and technologists to focus groups concerning their particular field of study. She did this for 7 years. Sally’s multitude of friends through the years will remember her great sense of humor, her mischievous ways and her infectious smile. She always had a story to tell or a crazy comment to make, often called, “Sally Sassy Sayings!” Sally is predeceased by her parents and her two beloved brothers, Marvin, Jr. and Gerald Glenn. She is survived by beloved nieces and nephews and her wonderful sister, Alice G. Burland. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 pm Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Cathedral of Light, 2570 Valley View Ln, Farmers Branch, TX 75234.
