Wichita Falls was Bob’s hometown. Growing up he was a dedicated boy scout and once received a medal that won him great honor and an article in the newspaper. His award was for Order of the Arrow, best boy scout in Wichita Falls. Bob continued with the boy scouts and to the level of Eagle Scout. Besides spending time with his family and friends, he loved playing sports. By the time he reached high school he was taking football very seriously. Bob always said the whole town regarded the high school football game as the Friday night entertainment, and he felt very special to be a part of it. His team went on to win the State Championship with Bob as the ‘Blocking Back’ in 1958. He attended TCU for a year and transferred to Midwestern University (Wichita Falls) where he earned a Bachelors in Business Administration in 1964.
Bob began his career in banking at the Texas Department of Banking as a Bank Examiner in 1966. This was followed by a number of banking positions within the industry; including Executive Vice President, President, and CEO. Bob earned a reputation for his ability and leadership in starting new bank branches across the Dallas area, including in Carrollton, where he eventually called home for nearly 40 years. During his 40+ year banking career he developed a number of friendships, both with coworkers and customers. From being held-up by a top ten FBI most wanted escaped fugitive to working with famous customers like Hollywood Henderson of the Dallas Cowboys, he had a few stories to tell along the way too.
Bob married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Whitson (Pat) and they were married for 17 years. They had two sons, Byron and Kevin. Years after their divorce he met and then married Katherine Dixon (Kathi). They were married 41 years and had two children, Christopher (CJ), and Lindsey. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed planning big family vacations in the summer.
Bob was a great water skier. He spent summers as a youth at Lake Bowie and later spent many summers with his family and friends skiing on the waters of Lake Ray Hubbard. Of all of Bob’s hobbies his favorite was found on the golf course. He played for many years and enjoyed venturing to new courses. His favorite golf course was Pebble Beach in California. It was a trip given to him and his three sons by his wife, Kathi, and it was one of his most memorable experiences. He volunteered for the Byron Nelson Golf Championship for many years in Las Colinas and enjoyed being a part of that program and meeting many players. In 2009 in Frankston, TX at the Pine Dunes Golf Course, he made a hole in one and it was an incredibly proud moment in his golfing career. Not only did he enjoy playing golf but he loved to watch golf tournaments on TV, as well as all of the Dallas sports teams. He was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.
One of Bob’s favorite places to visit was Las Vegas. He was a skilled blackjack player and was invited to play in many tournaments there. He took each of his four children to Vegas as a present when they turned 21. It became an Edgmon rite of passage in our home, for dad to be able to take his kids and teach them how to play. Whether it was with his wife, his kids, or his many friends, Vegas was always a special place full of wonderful memories made playing blackjack or seeing incredible shows.
In his final months, Bob had the opportunity to reflect back on his life and spoke about it on multiple occasions. He talked about his family, which was most important to him. He felt blessed to see the generations of this family grow and blossom. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and knew he had passed on the wisdom and virtues to them that were most important to him. He continuously expressed gratitude towards his wife Kathi for staying by his side and always supporting him through his many health battles.
