Richard was born May 3, 1929, in Drumright, Oklahoma to the late James Robert and Sarah Opal Haught McCance. He attended high school in Grayville, Illinois where he excelled in athletics such as Track, Football, and Basketball. He was also class president. After graduating, he attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and College of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico where he received his Bachelor's of Accounting. Richard enlisted in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge after serving five years. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as a church elder. With his hard-working and helping nature, he assisted the church with establishing a new building in Denver City in the 1960s.
Richard married Ruth Julia Seymour McCance on February 15, 1951, and together they raised three children. Richard was a very active father. He served as a Boy Scout Leader and also assisted with building the Scout Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with family, introducing his children to some of his favorite songs, dancing with his wife,even reading the funny papers to his children every Sunday in funny voices. Not only did he love to laugh himself he enjoyed hearing the laughter of his family members. He also had a great love for flying. Richard started flying while at the age of 50 and continued well on until he was 89, it gave him much joy.
Richard is survived by his daughter Linda McCance Shaffer; and his son Richard McCance Jr. (Marsha); his grandchildren Lashelle Shaffer Jennings (Steve), Stephanie Shaffer Bilton (Guy), Kimberly McCance Christian (Paul), Melissa McCance, Dustin McCance (Paige), Jeremy Kennedy, Nicholas Kennedy, Paige Kennedy, his niece Amy Bunting Grogan, his nephew Brad Bunting and his nephew Jim Bunting and 13 great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Julia Seymour McCance; his son-in-law Russell Shaffer and his daughter Cheryl McCance Kennedy; his father James Robert McCance and his mother Sarah Opal Haught McCance and his sister Helen Louise McCance Bunting.
A funeral service for Richard will be held Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Metrocrest Funeral Home, 1810 N Perry Rd, Carrollton, TX 75006. A committal service will occur Monday, November 20, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Pickwick-McAdams Cemetery, Graford, TX 76449.
