February 6, 1929 to Joseph Shaw Kavanagh Sr and Anne Marie Kavanagh in Brooklyn, NY. At age 11 Joe moved with his family to Memphis, TN. He graduated from Catholic High in Memphis. He served two years in the US Army in Japan and earned the rank of sergeant. He graduated from the University of Memphis in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
His business career began October 9, 1951 at GMAC. He spent 40 years with GMAC and made many moves with the company. His last move was to Dallas, TX where he retired in 1991.
He married Miriam (Mim) Scruggs on July 26, 1952 and they had four children.
Joe was a devout Catholic and never wavered in his faith. He was a devoted husband and father.
Joe was an avid and excellent golfer He loved hunting, fishing, and all sports.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Mary and Cy; and son Joseph Shaw Kavanagh III, fondly known as Pete.
He is survived by his bride of 70 years, Mim, daughters Mary King (David), Judy Strohacker (Oscar), son Thomas Kavanagh (Holly), 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and sister Anne Marie Sain.
We will forever miss Joe's presence that was so vital and so much fun. The twinkle in his blue eyes stole all our hearts.
There will be a visitation from 5 PM to 9 PM with the Rosary being said at 7:00 PM at Rhoton Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church on Thursday June 1, 2023.
