In Memoriam, Helen Evelyn Nelson Phaling 1933-2014
George Lynn Phaling passed away July 28, 2018; Helen passed away December 19, 2014; both in Carrollton, Texas and in the loving care of their family. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, George graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia at age 19. Helen was born in Muskegon, Michigan and graduated from Muskegon High where she played trombone in the marching band. A medical exemption kept George from wartime service, and he was hired by the DuPont Company, beginning his 45 year career with them in Philadelphia. He met Helen while working at the Montague, Michigan plant. When notified of a transfer to Northern Ireland, he told Helen he didn't want to go alone and proposed. After marriage and a Bermuda honeymoon in 1959, they set off for Europe aboard the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth. This adventure was an excellent opportunity to travel the continent, and they did. The final transfer came in 1961 to Beaumont, Texas, where they enjoyed a tight-knit social group with other DuPont families, famous for regular bridge club dinners. They were long-time members of Trinity UMC and supporters of the arts. Helen worked at the Art League and Buckner Children's Home. George retired from DuPont in 1990. In 2012, they moved to Carrollton, Texas to be closer to family. George was always calm, organized and handy with tools. He enjoyed woodworking, photography and collecting stamps, and will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, silly sayings, and love of reading, ice cream and chocolate. Helen was a loving, kind and patient wife and mother, a good cook and seamstress who enjoyed crafts, reading and music, especially singing in the choir at Trinity. They are survived by children; Greg Phaling of Carrollton, Texas; Lynn Babin and her husband David of Tampa, Florida; and grandchildren Stephen Phaling, Alicia Babin, Eric Babin and Caroline Babin. A private ceremony will be held at Hilltop Memorial Park in Carrollton, Texas where George will be laid to rest beside Helen. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caregivers at Autumn Leaves and at The Veranda at Rosemeade for their compassionate care of our loved ones.
