Ann Smith Maxwell was born on November 3, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, and passed away at her home on January 15, 2025, at the age of 91. Ann was the daughter of Adon Smith and Nancy L. Smith. She grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and during this time, she contracted polio, living paralyzed in the hospital for over a year. She made a remarkable and full recovery, which gave her a deep appreciation for life and the ability to find great joy in day-to-day living. The March of Dimes and Shriners paid for her hospital stay, and as a result, she became an avid fundraiser for their organizations throughout her life. After graduating high school, she attended Tulane University and the University of Georgia, where she studied art. While there, she met Thomas Maxwell, and they married in 1956, sharing 58 years of marriage until his passing in 2014. Ann and “T” lived in Memphis for 20 years, where she enjoyed being a homemaker, a Girl Scout leader, a room mom, attending church, playing tennis, and serving at a home for adults with special abilities. They relocated to Carrollton in 1980, where she worked for the CFB school district in the cafeteria and as a crossing guard, all while continuing to be a wonderful homemaker. She loved using her gift for creating to make hats, booties, and blankets for premature babies in the hospital. She was also a member of Redeemer Covenant Church in Carrollton for many years. In her later years, she enjoyed retired life at Lakeview at Josey Ranch, where she made many friends and delighted in singing in the choir. Throughout her life, she took great pleasure in painting, crocheting, needlework, quilting, and crafting unique pieces for her family. She earned numerous awards for her intricate and beautiful creations. Ann’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving children: Angela M. Johnson and son-in-law Mark; Susan A. Maxwell; Thomas Maxwell Jr. and daughter-in-law Debbie; and Betsy M. Flynn and son-in-law Sean. She was a proud grandmother to Caroline J. Lee, Patrick M. Johnson, Harrison L. Maxwell, Kyle M. Maxwell, Erica J. Frogue, Mackenzie A. Maxwell, Jacob C. Flynn, and Mia E. Flynn, as well as a great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren. A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at Lakeview at Josey Ranch on January 26 at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ann’s honor to the March of Dimes or Shriners Hospitals for Children. Ann’s legacy of laughter, joy, appreciation, and artistry will be cherished by all who were fortunate to know her.
