Obituary of Gary L. Wood
Gary L. Wood, 82, of Carmel, Indiana departed this life Sunday, January 16, 2022. Gary was born in Albany, Indiana to the late Harold E. and Mythel I. (Painter) Wood. He attended Albany Elementary School and Albany High School. Gary then earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business education from Ball State University. As a young man, he had worked as a ticket-taker at the Albany Theatre, a farm hand in Albany, in a dairy factory in New Mexico, within Yellowstone National Park, and at J.C Penny’s in Muncie. He then would teach for Indianapolis Public Schools for 33 years, retiring in 1994. Gary was dedicated to enriching the lives of our youth, and taught at Shortridge High School for 20 years, and Northwest High School for 13 years teaching Business, Drivers Education, and computer-based courses. He was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Marion County Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, Indianapolis Education Association, Indiana Business Education Association, and the Indianapolis Business Education Council. Gary was a kind and gentle soul who always put his family and faith first. He was a former member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, and a current dedicate member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He was happiest making memories with his beloved family and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Ann Wood, his parents Harold and Mythel Wood, brother, Gene Wood, and grandmother, Hazel Painter. Gary is survived, by his devoted children, Mark Wood, Scott Wood and his husband Tod Callis, and Kristina Wiseman and her husband Gerald Wiseman; his loving granddaughters, Sara & Grace Wiseman, and a host of grateful students, old colleagues and friends. A Memorial Mass for Gary will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 25th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Carmel Cemetery. Masks will be mandatory and social distancing exercised.
