Edward Boyd Mitchell, 83, of Westfield, Indiana, passed away January 24, 2024. He was born February 15, 1940 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to the late Jabez Taylor and Naomi Pearl Mitchell. He grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico and received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from New Mexico State University. After 30 years of service, he retired from Westinghouse Electric Corp and earned his M.A. in Teaching from Jacksonville University. He then taught high school math and physics at a private school in Atlanta for 20 years. Ed loved teaching.
Edward was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, IEEE (Electrical Engineering Organization), SPEBQSA (barbershop quartet singing). His other interests and hobbies included woodworking, painting, photography, and off-road motorcycling. He spent a summer teaching aboard an active-duty US Navy carrier and volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Beth Mitchell; his son Kevin John (Lorena) Mitchell, son Jeffrey Boyd (Rebecca) Mitchell, daughter Kelly Lynn (Matt) LaFollette; grandchildren Meaghan, Madison, Matthew, Julia, and Allison; and great-grandchildren Oliver and August.
Along with his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Taylor Mitchell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 14598 Oak Ridge Rd., Carmel, Indiana. There will be a calling at the church beginning at 9:00 AM. Burial will be held at a later date in Oliver Springs, Tennessee.
