Obituary of David William Hollensbe
David William Hollensbe, age 62, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away at home on Monday, July 1, 2024. Dave was born on August 13, 1961 in Lafayette, Indiana to Gerald and Marilyn Hollensbe. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1979, where he played football and was known by his friends as “The Hawk.” While there, he met the love of his life, Teresa. They married on June 15, 1985. Dave then went on to attend Indiana University for his undergraduate years, though he never technically graduated, as he would proudly proclaim. He continued his education at the Indiana University School of Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1987. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor societies. Dave completed his residency at IU in urology. Dave was a successful and esteemed urologist with Urology of Indiana in Carmel for nearly 30 years, specializing in prostate cancer surgery. He was a pioneer in the use of the da Vinci surgical robot for prostatectomies, helping it become the standard of care for prostate cancer patients throughout the state and the Midwest. Affectionately known as “the Colonel” by his staff, he was trusted and cherished by his patients, nurses, and fellow doctors during his years of practice. A larger-than-life character, Dave often reflected the personality of a curmudgeon. Yet underneath his stern demeanor, he was a man who adored his family, especially his wife, “Lovie,” and his “little buddy,” Colin. He loved to reminisce about old memories, watch home videos he had recorded, and give his passionate opinion on just about anything; from politics to mashed potatoes. He treasured family traditions and always emphasized the fruits of hard work and knowledge. Dave was known to give lectures about what he had learned while listening to Great Courses on tape, and insisted that his sons made sure the sidewalk was perfectly edged doing yardwork. He often spent many summers at his parents’ lake cottage on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse, Indiana. While there, he would annually slalom ski well into his forties, just so he could prove that he could still do it, and bought the latest water toys for all to play with. He always insisted that his sons, nieces, and nephews should do at least one “behind the boat activity” per day. Most of all, Lake Wawasee was a “happy place” for him and his siblings. Dave was an avid golfer and a loyal member of Crooked Stick Golf Club. He especially enjoyed golfing with his Flounders group, where they would often take golf trips and vacation together at the Hollensbe home in Bonita Springs, Florida. In his free time, he enjoyed reading, traveling, and enthusiastically watching Fox News. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Dave is survived by his wife Teresa; three sons, Leland (Carly), Eric, and Daniel Hollensbe; grandson, Colin; parents, Gerald and Marilyn Hollensbe; brother, Donald (Julie) Hollensbe; sister Sheryl (Bill) Clifford, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his sister Sharon Scheib and brother Darrin Hollensbe. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (14598 Oak Ridge Road, Carmel, Indiana) on Tuesday, July 9th, from 4:00-8:00 PM, and Wednesday, July 10th, from 9:00-11:00 AM. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with a burial service following at Hamilton Memorial Park (4180 Westfield Road, Westfield, Indiana). Expressions of sympathy and donations in Dave’s honor may be made to the Evans Scholars Foundation, ZERO Prostate Cancer charity, or Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Leppert Mortuary- Carmel Chapel.
