Bob was a graduate of Laboure High School in St Louis and entered the Naval Reserves upon his graduation. He worked for the Kroger Company for 43 years. Over his career, he held many roles starting as a store clerk in high school and retiring as general manager of Kroger’s largest dairy in 1997. Additionally, he served as an advisory board member of American Dairy Association Indiana Inc.
Bob was an avid golfer and fisherman and relished his retirement years living in southwest Florida. A typical day would find him enjoying a round of golf at Lexington Country Club in Fort Myers or on the Sanibel Island Pier fishing for sheepshead and red snapper. His fish fries for family and friends were as legendary as the fish stories he loved to tell. Bob enjoyed traveling, philanthropy (having sponsored an impoverished Guatemalan child for ten years), crafting handmade shell creations, and could fix just about anything, whether it was worth fixing or not!
Bob had a way of making every event special. From his infamous Halloween costumes, to his classic deep-fried Thanksgiving turkey, to Christmas Eve with Santa arriving in person to handout gifts, his family was on the receiving end of these special traditions and delighted in his careful planning and execution of each occasion.
Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol (Schulte) Scher, son Tim (Amy) Scher, daughters Jan (Matt) Cohoat, Sue (Tim) Cox, son Dan (Christine) Scher, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
