Robert’s family moved to North Carolina where he graduated from Walter M. Williams High School in Burlington, North Carolina in 1963. In the fall Robert went to High Point University and, after graduation, joined the university staff as Director of Admissions. During that time Robert also received a graduate degree in Guidance and Counseling from UNC at Greensboro.
In 1976 Robert, along with his wife Phyllis and son Robert A. Wells III, purchased Cabbage Key Island in southwest Florida. Years later he added Tarpon Lodge & Restaurant to the family business.
Robert was an avid sportsman who loved fishing and hunting.
Robert leaves behind Phyllis, his wife of 56 years, two sons Robert (Jessica) and Kenneth, and five grandchildren: Julia, Madelynn, Mason, Caroline and Makenley all of whom added great joy and happiness to his life. Also surviving are his sisters Evelyn Gray and Charlene Hix who reside in Georgia.

A celebration of life will be held at Tarpon Lodge in Bokeelia, FL at a later determined date.
