Jose, a native of Lares, Puerto Rico, was born to the late Juan and Geralda Velez. He was the sixth of seven children and the only boy. Tragically, three of his sisters preceded him in death. In 1967, Jose embarked on a life-changing journey, moving to the bustling streets of New York City.
Jose met Maria and her four children on a train in Queens while traveling to work in 1980. Jose's pursuit of Maria for many years was a testament to his commitment. In 1982, they had one son and took their family to Philadelphia. Jose worked countless factory jobs in Philadelphia to help his family and provide a better life. In the mid 80’s, Jose obtained his G.E.D. to give himself more opportunities and became a Police Officer for the City of Philadelphia on January 2nd, 1995. Being a Police Officer was a job that Jose cherished. He wore his uniform with the utmost pride. Jose’s example led to seven other family members and friends joining the Police force over the next several years. While in Philadelphia, Jose joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he had the privilege of baptizing his entire family. Jose retired from the Police department after 20 years of service and moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where he enjoyed his retirement until his death.
When he wasn't working or serving his community, Jose loved nothing more than spending quality time with his family. Jose's love and devotion to his family were unwavering whether it was a lively game of dominoes, a friendly sports match, a leisurely boat ride, or simply being there for his children whenever they needed him.
Jose's memory will forever be cherished by his children, Elizabeth Rodrigues, Ivan Rosado-Velez, Claudia Torres, and Moises Velez—14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Jose was preceded in death by his oldest son, Byron Delgado.
A visitation for Jose will be held Wednesday, May 15th from 10 - 12pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints, 1928 Chiquita Blvd S, Cape Coral, FL 33991. The funeral service will be held at 12pm with entombment to follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S, Cape Coral, FL 33991.
