Gary Walter Smith, 82, of Cape Coral, FL, passed away on July 22nd after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Gary was born on September 18, 1939 to Charles and Regina Smith in Milwaukee, WI. After attending various primary schools in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas, he attended Penn State University before deciding to move to Richmond, Virginia. He then became part of the first graduating class from Virginia Commonwealth University to receive a physics degree.
His physics degree led him to a career in plastics engineering working for companies such as ICI, Mobil, Crown, and Blueridge Films. He also lent his expertise to overseas companies as a consultant in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and India.
He loved technology (especially computers), animals, and fishing and being on the water. He also loved to travel and visited well over a dozen countries.
Gary retired in 2013 after over 40 years in the plastics engineering industry. He and Nancye moved to Florida to enjoy retirement and spend more time with his grandsons and his cats.
Gary is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Dick. He is survived by his wife, Nancye Smith; his children Terry, Jeff, Scott, and Sheri; and his grandchildren, Greyson, Nathan, Michael, and Jacob.
