Doña Fela is survived by her daughters- Miriam Maldonado, Carmen Del Valle, Zoraida Yamanishi, Margie Figueroa, Judith Pacheco, Marlyn Cordero-Ruiz and Migdalia Espinosa. She was a grandmother to 21 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Aida Szerlag and her very best friend, Carmen Figueroa.
Our beloved Tata loved babies, cats, dogs and any other type of innocent being that she could feed. She was an avid gardener and took pride in sharing her harvests with family, friends and neighbors. Until she no longer could, she ate a small salad and took a walk outside every day; even during those infamous Chicago winters.
She loved us deeply. Though her meals were great and her willingness to open her doors for us in our time of need was gracious, it was her nightly prayers for her children, and three generations beyond them, where her devotion to us was most felt. There is no doubt that as her last breath left her lips , she was immediately greeted with the words, “Bien, siervo bueno y fiel.”
We will have a Celebration of Life memorial service for our Mami/Tata/Doña Fela in Chicago next Spring. We would like to give her the memorial she deserves and have started a donation fund that will go directly to the service. If you would like to contribute, please Zelle or Venmo your donation to [email protected] or 3124515212 (Tania Pacheco).
Once we have all the details, we would love for you to join us in celebrating her life full of love.
