Last Friday evening, April 28th, we lost our beloved husband and father. He was only 66 years old when he passed away in the care of Cape Coral Hospice. Al resided in Cape Coral, Florida. He was born on September 5, 1956 in North Miami Beach to his parents Alfred Edward Johnson Sr. and Emma Lou (Frutchey) Johnson. Al graduated from Bishop Verot High School in 1974. He attended St. Bernard College in Cullman, AL and St. Leo’s College in St. Leo, FL; graduating in 1979. He was a well-liked, star athlete, earning a varsity letter with distinction, in both varsity football and basketball and also played for his college rugby and football teams.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; Alfred Edward Johnson Sr. and Emma Lou (Frutchey) Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rosemary (Mattesich) Johnson, his four children: Maria Stevens and her husband Matthew of Merritt Island, FL, Anthony Johnson, Renee Caney and her husband Michael of Cape Coral, FL and Devin Johnson; his four grandchildren: Bryson Caney (3), Tyson Caney (2), Dylan Stevens (2) and Melanie Stevens (infant), brother, Mark Johnson and sister, Robin Tyler; sister-in-law, Barbara Morin and brother-in-law, John Mattesich and his wife, Marie and survived by one niece, and many nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
As you can imagine, we are completely devastated. He was a one-of-a-kind man. Al had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh through his anecdotal storytelling. He may have been a man of few words at times, but he always told it like it was; he was a straight shooter. Al was always driven. He helped everyone where he could, and had a heart of gold. He worked as a Homebuilder for 40 years; helping first time home buyers begin the next chapter of their lives as homeowners in Brevard, Charlotte and Lee County, as well as in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was a Godly man and served as a missionary in the Dominican Republic and also sponsored four children there. Al was an avid fisherman and never stopped dreaming of being out on the water, even in his final hours.
We were blessed to know Alfred. Our lives will never be the same, we will deeply miss him. This is not a goodbye, but a “See Ya Later Big Al! He may be gone too soon, but never forgotten. We love you so much and will cherish every memory, every moment we had with you…Rest in Peace Big Al, the Kiddies Pal. May he rest in peace in God’s memory, For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:1
Memorial services will be held at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S Cape Coral, FL 33991 on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Please continue to pray for us as we heal and move forward.
